Details
We're joining in NYCLU's monthly discussion. This month:
Civil Liberties Discussion Series & Volunteer Action:
Earlier this month, Texas authorities raided a Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) ranch and took more than 400 children into state custody. As the custody hearings regarding these children continue, questions of the child, parental and religious rights implicated in the controversy continue to emerge.
As part of the NYCLU's continuing Civil Liberties Discussion Series, Lisa Graybill of the ACLU of Texas will discuss the civil rights and civil liberties issues at play in FLDS case.
NYC Civil Rights & Civil Liberties Meetup
The meetup should have 25+ people since we're having it in conjunction with a great discussion group that the NYCLU just started in September. I went to the first one and it was great: great people from NYCLU, great attendees, and a great topic. I instantly knew it would be a great central activity for our renewed NYC Civil Rights & Civil Liberties Meetup upon which we can expand with other events and activities as we see fit - suggest via mailing list or email me directly.
We'll be meeting with the others going to the discussion series. Look for me or Timothy. We'll meet shortly before the 7 pm discussion start either in the NYCLU lobby on the 19th floor or in the conference room right by it where the discussion group is.

Andreas
"The FLDS Polygamist Ranch Raid in TX raises a lot of interesting questions that don't have clear answers and made for good discussion. Some of the main ones were the right to freedom of religion & thought vs. the apparently frequent violation of TX Statutory Rape law with FLDS girls being 'married-off' to (sometimes very) older men younger than the 16 year old minimum and quickly having babies. Great how the NYCLU used ACLU of TX personnel on a conference call to give a local perspective."
