Details
We're joining in NYCLU's monthly discussion. This month:
Civil Liberties Discussion Series & Volunteer Action: Military Recruitment
Though media coverage of the war in Iraq has started to wane, the reality hasn't faded for New York City's high school students.
Military recruiters are under constant pressure to meet and exceed recruitment quotas. U.S. Army statistics list New York City as a primary source for enlistment, and [military] recruiters are using aggressive, heavy-handed tactics to entice NYC Youth to enter military service.
Yet the NYC Department of Education does nothing to enforce policies restricting recruiter activities and protect students? privacy.
As part of the NYCLU?s continuing Civil Liberties Discussion Series,NYCLU organizers will discuss the civil rights and civil liberties issues at play with military recruitment of high school students.
NYC Civil Rights & Civil Liberties Meetup
The meetup should have 25+ people since we're having it in conjunction with a great discussion group that the NYCLU just started in September. I went to the first one and it was great: great people from NYCLU, great attendees, and a great topic. I instantly knew it would be a great central activity for our renewed NYC Civil Rights & Civil Liberties Meetup upon which we can expand with other events and activities as we see fit - suggest via mailing list or email me directly.
We'll be meeting with the others going to the discussion series. Look for me or Timothy. We'll meet shortly before the 7 pm discussion start either in the NYCLU lobby on the 19th floor or in the conference room right by it where the discussion group is.
