Hi everyone,
For now, NYCLU has another forum on the vital topic of your next 'internal passport', the 'real' ID. Hope to see you there!

Thanks for coming to the last few events. The one last week was excellent, had great participation, and really dedicated presenters and activists. We want to do more in this group so we'll choose an additional meeting time and discuss our next moves. We'll be posting a poll in the next few days to choose the meeting time.

NYCLU's holding a forum on the 'not-so-real' ID.

Let's go participate in this forum on this extremely serious threat to privacy and civil rights!

If you thought the Patriot Act and warrantless wiretapping were bad, wait until you hear what the Bush Administration has up its sleeve next.

Passed by Congress in 2005 with no meaningful debate, the Real ID Act attempts to create America's first-ever national ID card system.

Under the Bush Administration's vision, a Real ID card will become an internal passport for Americans and part of everyday life--a way to keep track of your movements, your activities and your lifestyle.

following is from NYCLU (http://nyclu.org/node...)

The Bush Administration is pushing forward with its plan to create America?s first-ever national identity card system, known as the Real ID Act.

Under President Bush?s vision, a Real ID card will become an internal passport for Americans and part of everyday life--a way to keep track of your movements, your activities and your lifestyle.

Join us in Manhattan on Thursday evening for this important forum where you will hear from national and local experts on what a national ID card system will mean for New Yorkers and what you can do to put a stop to it. The forum, "Your Papers Please: What the Real ID Act Means for American Values," is co-sponsored by the New York Society for Ethical Culture.

As someone who spent 16 years in prison before being cleared as a result of my civil rights being violated, I know only too well the importance of civil rights. I raise awareness about wrongful convictions through and try to bring about changes, through lectures, media interviews, lobbying lawmakers and testifying at hearings in Albany. I look forward to meeting with like minded people as well as networking. The only way evil triumphs is when good people do nothing.

Who attended?

    •  This event was awesome!!!! It was an all-star lineup of speakers, whose deliveries were great, explaining the issues in a easy to understand, interesting way, interspersing humor to maintain a loose atmosphere while discussing this very serious topic.
    •  The speakers all had good points to share to the crowd and it was wonderful that they are in this for all of us. Im glad i had the opportunity to be present at this event
